In a plan to become one of Japan's leading “green†cities, the city of Sakai has announced the "Sakai City Waterfront Mega Solar Power Generation Plan."
The ambitious project is one of the largest of its kind in the world. It is a collaboration between Sakai, electronics giant Sharp Japan, and Kansai Electric Power.
The project comprises two mega solar power generation plants that are projected to be finished by the year 2010. The plants will have a combined output of 38,000 kW.
Sharp and Kansai Electric claim the solar facilities will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 10,000 tons annually. They will be used to generate power for Sharp and other companies operating in Sakai.
