A group of young entrepreneurs in Berlin have created a refugee school which teaches computer programming to people with migrant status -- people for whom this skill opens up a much-needed opportunity for employment.
The refugee school is cleverly titled 'Refugees on Rails,' a pun on the programming language Ruby on Rails. Its mission is to teach a hard skill -- and a very employable skill, at that -- to refugees who often desperately need a means of generating a stable income. Because coding is a trade that can be practiced anywhere in the world, it's ideal for people whose ability to stay in one place can often be subjected to sudden change.
Refugees on Rails is requesting donations of laptops in order to aid in their quest of bringing computer programming skills to Berlin's refugees.
