A collaborative effort created by designer Michael Schmidt as well as architect Francis Bitonti, this 3D printed dress fits Dita Von Teese like a glove.
Being able to program a design into a computer program allows for garments that are so precisely made that there is no room for any human error. The floor-length mesh gown is made of nylon that was built up layer by layer through a 3D printer laser that fused together plastic powder particles. The resulting material is surprisingly flexible and fully articulated, and the netted structure hugs Dita's body and lets the burlesque star move with ease.
This printed dress demonstrates one way in which technology is enabling designers to create the impossible.
