An undergraduate student working out of Nottingham Trend University in the UK has developed an innovative new police shield that is designed to make it possible for police to maintain a clear view of their rioters, while making it difficult for rioters to get an unhindered, blur-free view of police.
The issue with conventional police shields is that their use of a thin plastic barrier allows both sides to see each other clearly, something which emboldens rioters to resort to aggression, destruction and violence.
This is where Ben Palmer's police shield comes in. It is made of polycarbonate that is coated with a special kind of perforated vinyl that provokes an optical illusion wherein people on the white side of the shield (the rioters) disproportionately focus on the large white surface rather than the holes that perforate it.
This innovative design aims to give police a psychological leg-up while dealing with rioters.
