Optical Illusion Furniture

'The Parallel Universe' Collection Was Designed Using Opposing Lines

Finnish designer Henri Judin explores the use of opposing vertical and horizontal lines in his furniture line 'The Parallel Universe Collection.'

As a self described maximal minimalist, Judin designs his pieces with identical measurements and opposing lines -- one vertical and one horizontal, to create what appear to be optical illusions. His Liquorice chairs are made from bent steel rods that resemble licorice candy. The rods are laid in opposing directions, the seat being horizontal, and the back rest being vertical, creating a grid-like pattern when the chairs are stacked. The Liquorice shelves follow the same design, also resembling licorice. The tables featured in this collection exhibit twisted flat steel bars that create circular illusions.

These designs fall somewhere between wildly elaborate, and absolutely minimalist, creating shapes and patterns that are both visually and structurally unique.
