Functional Origami Canoes

ONAK's Fold-Up Canoes Let Anyone Explore the Water

While canoeing used to be the exclusive quarry of those with both storage space and vehicles large enough to carry the boats, ONAK, a Belgian design company, has created a fully functional origami canoe that folds up to the size of a suitcase. Rather than paper, the boat is made from a durable plastic designed in-house, but it weighs only 17 kilograms (37 pounds) nonetheless. The ONAK canoe's wheeled carrying case case also easily accommodates two paddles.

This origami canoe blows other canoeing alternatives out of the water. Whereas inflatable canoes are equally portable across land, they have poor performance in the water. Because of the ONAK canoe's rigid frame, it moves far more swiftly than inflatable boats, yet can still be transported far more easily than solid wood, metal, or kevlar boats. Urban campers take note.
