The Ooho Water Bottle is an Edible Alternative to Plastic Versions

The Ooho Water Bottle looks like the water bottle of the future. First of all, it does away with a rigid form, embracing a malleable blob-like one in its place. Secondly, it is entirely edible. Yet in spite of its biodegradable properties, the Ooho Water Bottle is strong, able to contain the water safely until a person wishes to drink it.

Created by three London-based industrial design students, Rodrigo García González, Pierre Paslier and Guillaume Couche, the Ooho Water Bottle employs a process known as 'spherification,' the technique of shaping liquids into spheres first experimented in 1946 and recently popularized by chefs at elBulli in Spain. It is made out of brown algae and calcium chloride, which comes together to form a hygienic double membrane gel around the portioned water.
