Green Aria Libretto Uses Scent To Tell Classic Story

Sponsored by fashion legend Thiery Mugler, the Green Aria scent opera is premiering at the Gugenheim Museum on May 31. The libretto written by Stewart Mathew uses 23 distinct scents to tell the story.

Talk about unique, there won’t be any singing at this show, instead, there will be six second sequences of perfume chords dictating the story. For this opera, the audience will have the task of deciphering the smell as it pertains to the plot.

Music for this innovative experience has been composed by Nico Muhly and Valgeir Sigurdsson, while the scents were created by perfumer Christophe Laudamiel.
