Netflix's Family Profile is a new feature that's being tested in select markets. The streaming service's algorithm quickly works to understand the viewing needs of each profile. However, when family members each have the own profile and sit down to watch something together, it can be hard for the service to combine the preferences of all present. In other words, if a parent watches a child's show on their profile, their algorithm is then re-calibrated to begin to offer similar titles, making it harder to find content.
The new Family Profile feature aims to amend this issue, providing a space that's accessible from the main screen with its own icon, but that's separate from others' individual profiles. Through this setting, families can select a curated list of movies or television shows that are appropriate for all, without it toying with the individual algorithm.
What's more, is that this profile can be edited to feature titles that are appropriate for different age ranges, depending on the ages of one's children.
