Photographer Monica Denevan Captures Everyday Life in Burma

Photographer Monica Denevan is a San Francisco native. Despite her history on the West coast, she has spent a great deal of time in Burma and China.

Denevan quickly took note of the way in which Burma was portrayed in the media. While news outlets focused largely on the region's heated problems, she become primarily preoccupied with the everyday life of Burma's people. She took it upon herself to document that which did not involve political strife, apparent in her images of sailing women, young children, resting men and even an individual swinging from a tree. Her pictures speak to a different side of the country, one that is more simplistic and rid of strife.
