Matter of Trust Takes Salon Hair Clippings to Clean Up Ocean Oil Spills

Phil McCrory and Matter of Trust have found an innovative use for old hair clippings. They've made hair mats that effectively absorb oil and use them to clean up the perilous aftermath of oil spills in the ocean.

McCrory was inspired to create his Oil Spill Hair Mats for Matter of Trust after watching the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill and specifically upon seeing just how much of the oil otters' fur soaked up. He then examined whether human hair had the same effect and the oil-absorbing hair mats were born.

According to Springwise, Matter of Trust now receives donated hair from thousands of salons. The finished Oil Spill Hair Mats are used to clean up the aftermath of oil spills, just like in the video above.
