These Mathew Borrett Pieces Fade Into the Background

Toronto-based artist Mathew Borrett recently sketched out a series of illustrations that subtly play with perception. Essentially, each picture depicts a collection of rooms. The inventiveness of the illustrator, is seen in how these spaces are depicted.

As one looks into the rooms, it as though one is peering into the background of the illustration. This is because Borrett skillfully obfuscates the background with the foreground. The foci of each picture are the rooms, of course. These are set against a white background. However, to define this as a background would be misleading. This is because the rooms are actually set behind the white background. The effect of this is that the background becomes the foreground. Likewise, the focus of the paintings -- the rooms -- becomes the background.
