Decaying Digital Illustrations

Matheus Berbel Depicts Inevitability in These Haunting Pieces

Marila, Brazil-based graphic designer Matheus Berbel recently completed a series of four digital illustrations that demonstrate the fleeting nature of all things beautiful.

On his Behance page, he explains that beauty, like everything, is subject to the withering winds of time. As these winds blow, such beauty erodes into ugliness. What were yesterday gleaming cities are today hollow ruins.

As far as the illustrations go, they depict a young man, somewhat reminiscent of a renaissance model, standing with crossed arms in an old, worn-down building at various degrees of decay. For instance, in the first frame, half of his body is decomposed while half of his face is a skull. After this, the frames zoom in successively, thereby emphasizing the inevitable nature of decay.
