Layered Plexiglass Paintings

The Made Matter of Empty Series by Yosman Botero is Illusory

It is not everyday that people stumble upon a truly mind-bending concept that rethinks everyday art techniques; the Made Matter of Empty series is revolves around one of those concepts. It takes classic paintings and turns them into three-dimensional illusions, tricking innocent onlookers into thinking they are about something completely different.

Created by Bogota-based artist Yosman Botero, who could be recognized for his Absent/Empty series, the Made Matter of Empty series involves sheets of plexiglass that have been stacked to form frameless boxes, creating an illusion of depth that would otherwise not be there. By creating cracks, bubbles and more, painted figures end up interacting with them in delightful ways. These figures in turn end up looking three-dimensional themselves, even if that is not the case.
