Louise Bourgeois' Textiles Focuses on Feminine and Domestic Themes

Although the late Louise Bourgeois might be known for her eerie, spider-inspired sculptures, she also dabbled in textile art from 2002 until her death last year. Last week, New York gallery Cheim & Read held an exhibition featuring six late fabric works of Louise Bourgeois to commemorate her contributions to the art scene as well as to celebrate her life.

Although fans of Louise Bourgeois's avant-garde work may find these tapestries and other textile art safe and unassuming, there is still a spooky element to their minimalist aesthetic that only this artist can bring forth. With themes such as marriage, motherhood, sexuality, femininity and domesticity, Louise Bourgeois' pieces address both the past and present. I especially like the vintage, graphic feel to each of them.
