Seaweed-Based Drink Capsules

The London Marathon Offered Runners an Eco-Friendly Drink Solution

An athletic event as large as the London Marathon is sure to create some waste, but these edible seaweed drink capsules are hoping to combat this, offering a waste-free solution, that hydrates the runners.

The capsules are biodegradable pods made of seaweed that can be filled with any beverage, like water. Easy to consume and packed with nutrients, these capsules offer the runner the hydration they need to progress, without the waste that's typically associated with rest stations. Once discarded, the seaweed-based wrapping will decompose in about the same amount of time as fruit does, which is typically between four to six weeks.

The recent London Marathon was the largest trial of the capsules, which are officially called Ooho Seaweed.
