The 'Listen Here' Interactive Map Plays Soundbites from Around Town

There are few times when it is socially appropriate to eavesdrop, but the 'Listen Here' interactive map makes it perfectly acceptable to listen in to the sounds of the city.

Created by UK-based designer Nicola Hume, the device allows tourists to plug in to maps and listen to the ambient noise heard in various parts of the city without having to actually travel there. Locals distribute microphones throughout the city and then secure them with attached bicycle-style locks. The surrounding noises that can be heard in that location are then transmitted to a central hub where a person can select a certain area and then listen in.

The device allows travelers to get the full sensory experience of a city -- complete with overhearing awkward conversations and other inappropriate sounds from a distance.
