Italian home BioCasa 82 is the first private European residence to receive the coveted LEED Platinum rating, the highest rating in the green building standard. This diminutive structure is incredibly energy-efficient, and derives 55% of its energy from renewable sources.
The roof of the home is equipped with a photovoltaic system that contributes towards electricity need, as well as a geothermal pump system that provides heat and hot water.
A carbon footprint analysis of the home showed that over the course of a century, its carbon footprint will be 60% lower than that of a typical building. The home was also constructed using 99% recyclable materials, so if it does ever get demolished, its building materials needn't be dumped in a landfill. All of these factors contributed to the building's LEED Platinum rating.
