Using 14 years of personal location data, Stephen Cartwright has created journey-charting photography that plots his path through life. A massive amount of position data was used in conjunction with long exposure photography to create beautiful photos with beams of vibrant light.
Cartwright recorded his position every hour since 1999. With GPS, his exact latitudes, longitudes and elevations were stored. This data was fed to a ‘XY LED Plotter’ that projected Cartwright’s position to be captured by camera. Using an Arduino processor and a RGB LED, the device followed his 14 year route.
This photography is interesting because it amalgamates a lifetime of movement into a single frame. Major events such as Cartwright’s cycling over North America and Eurasia are merged with mundane everyday travel into a piece of artwork.
