Custom Live-Work Spaces

This Space Modifies IKEA Products to Make Multipurpose Furniture

A couple in Los Angeles has made a customizable living and working space by hacking various IKEA products. With a strict budget, studio CHA:COL transformed a small loft space. Its solution was to create a hybrid space using modified IKEA furniture.

One of the pieces that the team made was a hybrid sitting area and storage using MDF board and plywood. This is one of the larger pieces and since it has a stair shape, it provides ample storage for books and takes advantage of the loft's high ceilings. The team also used other IKEA products like its kitchen cabinetry, which was later surrounded by built-in shelving.

IKEA "hacking" is becoming a popular method for affordable and creative renovations, taking advantage of its flat packing and use of adaptable materials.
