It’s hard to imagine planes capable of hovering or skimming the water at speeds of up to 250 miles per hour before the 21st Century. However, during the Cold War, a Russian design firm, known as Rostislav Alexeev, accomplished this amazing feat with the invention of Wing-in-Ground (WIG) planes.
In these recently released photos and video, you can see the strange looking and entrancing WIG planes, some as long as 500 feet long and 500 tons, in action.
