Buro Koray Duman Fills Negative Road Space With Communal Buildings

The team at the Buro Koray Duman design firm hopes to utilizes the negative space located under the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in New York City with communal building highway designs. The roadway is elevated off of the ground, providing a block of unused space that the firm proposes can be transformed into a neighbourhood with food shops and a sport's centre.

Often times the space under highways is wasted -- unless it is occupied by another joining road. Regardless, it is rare the space contributes to the community in any way. Buro Koray Duman hopes to change this by building an epicentre with foldable structures that could house food trucks and transportable kitchens. The layout could be used as a food centre to help feed busy urban areas.
