Meteorite-Hunting Metal Detectors

This High-Tech Metal Detector Can Track Down Iron Meteorites

A group of researchers working out of the University of Manchester are implementing a high-tech metal detector that is being used to track down rare and valuable iron meteorites up in the Arctic Circle.

To develop this high-tech metal detector, the engineers took inspiration from machines being used for everything from landmine detection, material recycling and airport security, with the end result being an exceptionally compact but powerful metal detector that can be towed along a Ski-Doo.

Currently being tested at the British Antarctic Survey's NERC Arctic research station in Norway, this high-tech metal detector could be used to help humanity better understand the origins of the solar system, as well as do a better job unearthing valuable interstellar materials for use here on Earth. What's more, the underlying technology could potentially be used to improve metal detection mechanisms in various industries.
