This Dutch Highway's 'Glowing Lines' Help Guide Motorists at Night

The N329 highway in Oss in the Netherlands has been fitted by glow-in-the-dark road markings or 'glowing lines' to better guide motorists. The pilot initiative is part of the Smart Highway project, a collaborative effort between the construction firm Heijmans and design firm Studio Roosegarde that aims to increase visibility and safety.

The Glowing Lines utilize luminescent paint that is charged by solar energy during the day, gathering enough energy to glow for up to 10 hours when it's dark. These markings are more visible than regular paint but still don't require electricity to function.

If the pilot project testing the Glowing Lines on the N329 is successful, it might not be long before the technology comes to a highway near you.
