Volvo is Designing a Robot That Quietly and Efficiently Picks Up Trash

ROAR (Robot-based Autonomous Refuse Handling) is a garbage-collecting project that aims to employ a robot to dump garbage bins from the streets instead of people. The robot would act alongside a human driver who would be able to oversee the process in the comfort of the truck.

Early mornings and stinky trash aren't exactly components that make up the ideal job. That is why Volvo partnered up with waste-management company Renova and two universities to design an alternative robotic system. The goal is not only to make this dreaded task one for a robot, but also to make the early morning collection process quieter and more efficient.

While this garbage-collecting robot does seem to solve many issues, there is also the question of lost jobs that the project will have to answer to.
