The FoodKeeper App Minimizes Waste with Cooking and Storage Tips

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Cornell University and the Food Marketing Institute have collaborated to release 'FoodKeeper,' a food conservation app that educates users about proper food storage. Each year the average American tosses away 1,160 pounds of food because they simply don't want to eat it or it has been spoiled.

"This application will help reduce food waste by showing users how to store foods properly, and reminding them to use items before they are likely to spoil," said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack in a statement. "This can help consumers save money and reduce the amount of safe food going to landfills."

The food conservation app is available on both Android and Apple devices, and includes features such as cooking tips, specific storage timelines for the refrigerator, freezer and pantry, and the ability to record in the calendar when products are purchased and receive notifications when they are nearing the end of their recommended storage date.
