DeepMind Technologies has developed an AI system that can be implemented to track animals in the Serengeti using photos. The DeepMind Technologies system can be implemented on a large scale in order to protect different species of wildlife. To produce the technology, the company partnered with wildlife experts to build a system that can identify animals in the massive amounts of photos taken of an area. The photos used by the system were of the Serengeti National Park, over a nine-year span. This system is able to shorten the identification process up to nine months.
The company is creating a pre-trained version that will be able to work with limited resources. The AI technology system could be more widely implemented in the future to bolster animal conservation initiatives.
