Amphibious Copter Drones

The Loon Copter Can Float Underwater and Soar In the Sky

The Loon Copter drone is an amphibious machine, designed by a group of engineers led by scientist Dr. Osamah Rawashdeh at Oakland University, that is just as comfortable in the water as it is on the sky.

This drone flies like any regular old quadcopter in the air but once it comes into contact with water, it can safely adopt a floating position or indeed use its propellers to push itself along the surface of the water. But the real stand-out feature of the Loon Copter drone is the fact that it is capable of going underwater as well. It does this by pushing water into its buoyancy chamber, causing it to sink. Once underwater, the Loon Copter can turn on its side, dive or go up, recording video footage and collecting data while doing so.

The Loon Copter holds a lot of promise for search-and-rescue missions, underwater industrial projects and scientific studies.
