Commercialized Confessionals

This Church's Confession Box is Sponsored by Bookies

The commercialized confessional at Our Lady & St Etheldreda Church in Suffolk is probably the first of its kind. The church’s confession box, known as the Sin Bin, has been sponsored by a bookie. An Irish betting firm, Paddy Power, has paid £10,000 to Our Lady & St Etheldreda Church after being approached by the church’s fundraising committee.

The commercialized confessional at Our Lady & St Etheldreda Church contains a green curtain with the Paddy Power logo. When it was officially opened, Italian jockey Frankie Dettori cut the ribbon.

Fr. Mark Hackeson expressed, "There is nothing morally wrong with gambling unless it deprives people of what is necessary to provide for their needs and that of their dependants."
