Shopkeepers in Guangxi Province Make Coloured Rice for Tomb Sweeping Day

This year, in preparation for the annual Tomb Sweeping Day in China, shopkeepers in the Guangxi province are working their magic to create coloured rice without the use of food colouring.

Instead, liquid from colourful plants such as the purple sweet cane and maple leaves are used to dye the rice to give it their distinct colours. The coloured rice is then used to worship their ancestors on Tomb Sweeping Day, which is a celebration of spring and the hope of a good forthcoming harvest. This coloured rice comes in five different colours, so you can totally spice up your dinner plate to match your veggies and meats! Coloured rice is a much better option to enliven your plate than the usual plain old white rice.

Made in blue, yellow, red, purple and black, this rice probably won’t be at your local supermarket!
