Belize's coast will now be monitored by a fleet of drones, that will fly over its coastline and monitor it to detect illegal fishing operations. Unsustainable and illegal fishing in Belize has damaged the country's rich coral reefs. It is hoped that the use of drones could help reverse this.
The drones were developed by the Wildlife Conservation Society and Conservation Drones, an organization that develops low-cost drones for conservation applications.
They are capable of flying autonomously for over an hour at a time, and offer a range of 50 km. They can capture high-resolution photo and video, and enables authorities to monitor some of the trickier and better hidden sections of the coast of Belize.
