Clay-based hydrogels could be an eco-conscious solution to our addiction to plastic. Plastic is cheap, convenient and easy to produce but does terrible things to the environment. Water-based hydrogels were great but inconveniently attached themselves to everyday materials such a glass. Enter clay-based hydrogels that don’t stick, are simple to make and are much more environmentally friendly.
Less than 0.4% of clay-based hydrogels are made from petroleum. Clay-based hydrogels can also be molded into free-standing shapes and can undergo fairly rigorous encounters with heat and sharp objects.
