The Uspenski Cathedral Data Center Will Keep 500 Homes Warm

A church that provides heat to homes? It sounds almost ludicrous, but that is what the Uspenski Cathedral data center in Helsinki will do.

Technically, the data center and server farm is located in the bedrock beneath the cathedral. Because data centers generate a lot of heat, the Cathedral data center will distribute that excess thermal energy to homes using a system of underground pipes. The server farm's heat will be captured and transferred across this piping network to 500 homes throughout the city.
