'Camp Sundown' Depicts Children Living With a Rare Genetic Disorder

Camp Sundown is an extraordinary series, put together by Tel Aviv-based photographer Adi Lavy, that was captured in a New York summer camp for children with Xeroderma Pigmentosum or XP, a rare genetic disorder that causes sensitivity to ultraviolet light.

XP patients experience serious reactions to exposure of both natural and artificial ultraviolet light, and as a result have to avoid bringing their skin in contact with sunlight.

Camp Sundown is remarkable in that it is run like any other summer camp, with the exception that children only come out after dark. They sleep late and play inside until after sunset, at which point they go outside and participate in outdoor activities.

Photographing subjects sensitive to ultraviolet light presented various challenges to the photographer, who could only use light available in the environment for her night-time photos.
