Moving Refugee Photojournalism

Brian Sokol's The Most Important Thing Documents Items

The Brian Sokol The Most Important Thing series was produced in partnership with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). Just like the title suggests, refugees were asked to pose while toting their most prized possession.

Among the items featured in The Most Important Thing are axes, pots, staffs, slings and knives. The items displayed are for the most part practical beyond sentimental, used to meet essential ends.

Paired with the images of these Sudanese people are descriptions, bringing readers into their lives and predicaments. According to the UNHCR, approximately 105,000 refugees have made the trek from Sudan's Blue Nile to Sudan's Upper Nile since 2011. As many left without much or any notice, these objects were taken hastily.
