Motion-Sensing Novel Sculptures

The Bristol Central Library Book Hive Installation is Mesmerizing

The Book Hive interactive art installation celebrates the incredibly impressive 400 year anniversary of the Bristol Central Library in the United Kingdom. Made up of 400 books to represent each year it has been around, the Book Hive installation has been embedded with motion sensors so that the individual novels open and close when people enter the premises.

Created by Bristol-based creative robotics collective Rusty Squid, the Book Hive installation will be on display until March 2014. As festive as it gets when it comes to library artworks, Psfk accurately describes it as "a choreographed celebration of literature." The reason for the 'hive' part of its Book Hive name is the fact that the novels are mounted on hexagonal bases that link together like one.
