Deborah Simon's Flayed Bears is a Provocative Piece of Social Commentary

Bears have been both maligned and loved over the years, but one artist is using a unique trio of bear sculptures to send her own message about the furry beasts. Artist Deborah Simon created the trio, collectively know as Flayed Bears, to make a statement about the animal's growing vulnerability in an ever-increasing urban landscape and examine difference between the fuzzy, innocuous Teddy Bear and the real life predator.

The three bear sculptures are made from faux fur, clay and wire and depict pieces of a bear's internal systems. A black bear shows off his spine and nervous system while a polar bear bears its circulatory system across its chest, and the grizzly reveals its intestines to observers. These bear sculptures are thought-provoking and make important statements about humanity and how we view our environment and the animals in it.
