The Hoola One Sucks Up Microplastic Pieces Humans Can't Retrieve

Countless people rely on vacuum cleaners to keep their homes looking tidy and now, people can also look to beach vacuums as a solution for keeping the environment free from ocean plastic waste. To address the fact that a portion of Hawaii is particularly prone to having plastic waste wash up on shore, a team of engineering students created Hoola One. This innovative beach vacuum prototype boasts the ability to collect microplastics, all the while leaving sand in place.

Unlike many other kinds of environmental pollutants, ocean plastic is very visible and is creating an ignorable problem. While there's a great effort to remove unsightly single-use plastic bags and plastic water bottles from waterways, there's now also a focus on minimizing microplastic and microfiber waste.
