Artistic Beach Cleanup Initiatives

Designers & Volunteers Joined Forces to Create an Eco Sculpture

Artist Liina Klauss, marine scientist Skye Moret, data visualization specialist Moritz Stefaner, and fifty volunteers have teamed up to create a sculpture made of waste obtained from beach-clean ups. The installation is called 'Perpetual Plastic' and is made from 4760 pieces of trash obtained by beach clean-up volunteers. The installation sits on a beach in Bali, Indonesia, and was conceived in order to understand the environmental impact of plastic production. The data sculpture emphasizes just how much waste ends up in the ocean.

The pieces of trash are colored into categories and all represent a different stream of waste. The white objects represent discarded plastic, the green objects represent recycled plastic, the red represents incinerated plastics, and the blue represents plastic that is still in use.

The installation remained on the beach for 36 hours and was responsibly disassembled and disposed of thereafter.Photo Credits: designboom, liinaklauss
