Rolls-Royce Plans to Achieve Net-Zero Aviation Carbon Emissions

The British engineering firm Rolls-Royce plans to eliminate aviation carbon emission by 2050. The company announced that it would modify its jet engines to run on renewable fuels. To accomplish its environmental goals, Rolls-Royce will introduce its sustainable fuels in 2023.

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) will be used in this endeavor. Unfortunately, the decarbonization process is slow; it is expected that the new fuels will make up only 10 percent of total consumption by 2030. SAF is made from non-fossil sources. This means that the emissions from SAF will not contribute to atmospheric CO2. The fuel formula will include food and forestry waste; purpose-grown energy crops such as willow and algae are included in the fuel's composition.
Trend Themes
1. Decarbonized Aviation Engines - Rolls-Royce's mission to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in aviation by 2050 through the use of sustainable aviation fuels and modified engines presents opportunities for companies to invest in eco-friendly aviation technology.
2. Increased Production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel - As the demand for sustainable aviation fuels grows, companies have an opportunity to invest in the production of non-fossil fuel sources such as food and forestry waste, algae, and willow crops.
3. Collaboration Between Industries in Reducing Carbon Emissions - The challenge to decarbonize aviation engines can be best addressed through collaboration between sectors such as aviation, energy, and agriculture to increase the scale and pace of development and implementation of sustainable fuels and modifications of engines.
Industry Implications
