Efficient Autonomous Cars

The AutoNOMOS Vehicle Uses Laser Scanners and GPS Readers

The AutoNOMOS, a result of a collaborative research project involving researchers from the University of Nevada and Freie Universitat, is an autonomous vehicle that recently proved its mettle by undertaking a massive 2,400 km journey from the USA/Mexico border at Nogales all the way to Mexico City.

This vehicle is equipped with seven laser scanners, nine video cameras, a GPS and radars located at the front, back and sides. Using this array of information, the AutoNOMOS vehicle gathers a whole range of information about its surrounding environment, and monitors the positions of vehicles, pedestrians and traffic lights.

The AutoNOMOS is only the latest in an increasing field of self-driven cars that are hitting the roads, and it may be the most impressive setup yet and one to look for in the future.
