Trunk-Sized Cell Towers

The AT&T Fly Away Provides Instant Cellphone Service

If you need phone service everywhere you go but aren't strong enough to lug around your own cell tower, then you need the AT&T Fly Away. Part of AT&T's new Remote Mobility Zone product line, the Fly Away is designed to provide cellphone reception anywhere in the world.

The AT&T Fly Away comes in a three-piece package that isn't nearly as big as you would expect it to be. The kit consists of a satellite dish, antenna and a small generator. Assembly time is quoted at 30 minutes and once up and running, the Fly Away can provide service for up to 14 different lines within a half-mile radius.

AT&T is marketing the Fly Away to first responders who need to set up an instant communication network. Like all good technology that was at first unavailable to the public (GPS units and Humvees come to mind), it's only a matter of time until this system is downsized and marketed to the public. Hopefully, AT&T will drop the price when that day comes -- the current system sells for between $15,000 and $45,000, excluding yearly fees.
