The 'DARKNESS' Camera is Designed For Astrophysics Research

A group of astronomers and scientists led by Ben Mazin at the University of California Santa Barbara have developed a futuristic astronomy camera that is designed to make use of the latest and greatest superconductor technologies to make it possible to take highly detailed photos of stars situated millions of lightyears away from our planet.

Dubbed 'DARKNESS,' this astronomy camera is fitted with microwave kinetic inductance detectors that enable it to monitor the wavelength of individual electromagnetic particles, which allows it to take photos of planets that leave out background signals.

The current iteration of this astronomy camera is designed to be compatible with the Hale telescope at Palomar Observatory, but the system is set to be tweaked for use with other telescopes, at which point it will be able to better assist astrophysicists in their study of distant planetary bodies.
