Japanese artist Motoi Yamamoto created an entire installation made out of salt in his series ‘Floating Garden.’
The project consists of ordinary table salt and it resembles the image of the same tropical storm that you would see via satellite. The task took him more than 10 hours every day for a week to complete and was done on the floor of Weber State University in Utah.
Once the exhibition is complete, the salt will be scattered into the Great Salt Lake as a symbolic homage to the use of his materials. This project was Yamamoto’s way of coping with the loss of his sister. It is customary tradition in Japan to use salt as a ritual during funerals; it is believed that it will welcome good spirits after death and avoid evil ones.
