Most photographers try to avoid artificial light and schedule shooting times for when natural light is at its peak. Olivo Barbieri however, works a little differently, and instead built his entire collection around the beauty he found in artificial light.
The photographer traveled the world, only to come out late at night. Barbieri mentioned he felt as though his work was akin to espionage, often exploring dark, desolate places to find the perfect shot of the nightlife.
Barbieri's work was put together in a book called 'Ersatz Lights: Case Study 1, East-West.' "Ersatz" is the German word for replacement or substitute, and Barbieri is concerned with how technology alters the world and how our interaction with it changes. Barbieri achieves his goal by showcasing how artificial lighting technologies can change our entire visual experience of the world.
