The Apple commercial trend is becoming very consistent. One day Apple uses a song in a new commercial, and the next day, the song instantly flies up the charts selling downloads like hot cakes.
The newest example is singer/songwriter Yael Naim, whose song 'New Soul' is featured in the new Apple MacBook commercial. The song instantly jumped up the iTunes song downloads chart, sitting at #2 at the moment.
I remember the days when artists used to scoff at the idea of big companies using their music in commercials and ads, for fear of cheapening their 'art'. I imagine these days there must be a long line of songs being pushed to Apple in hope of becoming the 'chosen one'.
As for lucky Yael Naim, she was born in Paris in 1978 to Jewish-Tunisian parents. At the age of four, she moved with her family to Ramat HaSharon, Israel, where she learned Hebrew and trained as a pianist. Her first solo album, In A Man's Womb, was released in 2001 and her second, Yael Naim, was released in October, 2007 in France peaking at number 11. Her style has been described as having a touch of folk and jazz, with mysterious and evocative words sung with a delicate and intentionally slightly husky voice.
UPDATE - On Billboard's new issue for the week of (2008-02-16), Yael Naim's 'New Soul' is the Hot Shot debut at no. 9!
