Pollution-Sensing Umbrellas

This Smart Umbrella Collects and Visualizes Air Pollution Data

While most umbrellas can protect you from the rain, this one also tracks air pollution data. The Sensing Umbrella was created and conceived by Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design students Saurabh Datta, Simon Herzog and Akarsh Sanghi as well as Italian ToDo Design's Giorgio Olivero. The team used an Arduino Yun micro controller to measure carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide pollution levels.

To make the Sensing Umbrella visually appealing as well, the team used sparking LED lights to visualize the air pollution data. The responsive light display changes colors and rhythm to alert people around it to local air pollution levels. The timestamped and geolocated information then gets uploaded and stored to Cloud for further analyzing.
