The Urine-Powered Generator Recycles Waste to Produce Electricity

The Maker Faire Africa 2012, held in Lagos this year, featured the urine-powered generator, a machine created by four teenagers that recycles human waste to produce energy

The Maker Faire Africa is an organization that features innovative African innovations and gadgets every year. This year, Duro-Aina Adebola, Akindele Abiola, Faleke Oluwatoyin and Bello Eniola created the urine-powered generator, which has the ability to isolate and purify the hydrogen particles in the urine to produce electricity.

This mechanism can run up to six hours with one liter of urine, which is quite a lot considering it usually gets flushed down the toilet anyway. Since the generator can be highly explosive, the design uses only one-way valves.
