The Turbine Bridge Puts in Motion a New Standard for Infrastructure

It wasn't enough for this project to simply connect two banks of the Amstel river; the Turbine Bridge brings so much more to the culture and the mechanics of the Dutch city. This is a truly revolutionary entry in the Amsterdam Iconic Pedestrian Bridge Competition.

DWAWU Architects' Borys Wrzeszcz and Adam Wiercinski worked with this harmonious hourglass shape as a way to span the waterway and incorporate a single arch in the center for the passage of boats. But why is this structure so bulky?

The dynamic shape of the Turbine Bridge is such that it integrates a working watermill to generate electricity sustainably. And the consequent vast spaces created by the machinery open up into atria, cafes and shops along the walking and cycling path, embraced by a twisting rib enclosure for the interior effect of a ship's hull.
