'Smellophone'

The Mobile That Captures Scent

Cell phones are becoming more and more interactive. Inventors at the Tokyo Institute of Technology are on the verge of creating the first mobile 'smellophone', a gadget that can capture a scent and replay it later. Each microchip contains a chemical sensor which can detect different traces in an odour. Engineers have already build a system that can record apples, oranges, melons and bananas and claim that these sensors can come up with thousands of combinations. So who would use this technology? "Amateur chefs desperate to recreate perfectly a restaurant meal they have enjoyed could use the device to record its aroma. And there could be more serious uses. Doctors, miles away from an accident, could be sent the smells around a wound to assess if it is infected." (Daily Mail)
